Topics & Schedule

Each week will focus on one of the Four Essential Skills for 21st Century Learning. There are two Units for each week, one is the activities and one is the deliverables. Once you’re satisfied with your progress in each unit you will need to click the ‘Complete’ button at the bottom of each unit’s page. You can then track your own progress through the course.

Once you are logged in you can click the Units below to get started!

Module 1 PLDA Adobe Connect Workshops
The Adobe Connect Workshops provide access to course instructors for participants who are unable to attend the Face-to-Face Workshop. Workshops are accompanied with video tutorials that are provided as part of a “flipped classroom” model. Workshops reinforce the skills and content covered in the videos and provide participants with the opportunity to clarify understanding and network with other participants.

Module 2 Communication
During this week, we want you to push yourself to try new tools, meet new people and explore the rich world of online communication. Take risks and make mistakes—this is where deeper learning occurs!

Module 3 Critical Thinking
As we all know, accessing information on the Internet can result in a sense of “information overload.” When cultivating your connections on Twitter and Google+ in Week 1, you may have experienced this overload. For example, in the retweeting activity, you may have found yourself looking at the #MACICT feed thinking, “when am I going to get the time to read all of these links?” There really is so much out there and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. However, we can use current tools to help us think critically about what we find on the Internet, and curate the best ideas to suit our professional learning needs.

Unit 2 Week 2 Deliverables
Module 4 Collaborating
One of the examples included in last week’s reading was the creative processes behind the creation of a restaurant logo. The example applies the 5 Is (identify, inspire, interpolate, imagine and inspect) to the process; the ideas are generated through collaboration between the group. This week, we’re going to try a similar process with a class we teach.

Module 5 Creativity
As we’ve seen over these past few weeks, participating online as an education professional can be a daunting but liberating experience. As the old saying goes, “in life, you get what you give,” and your participation in sharing ideas with colleagues benefits both those around you and yourself. You might also take the opportunity this week to think about the colleagues in your school environment and encouraging them to forge some of the connections that you have. When school communities connect with one another in both online and face-to-face spaces, we realise just how much of a global community we become as citizens of the world, or netizens in “web speak.” This week caps off the mini online course component, although we hope that the connections you’ve established here with your colleagues and the wider community will continue throughout your journey of life-long learning. To put the icing on the cake, we’d love to hear you speak first-hand about your own experiences learning online and nothing beats hearing you in person, thanks to simple video technology available on the kinds of devices that we carry in our pockets!
